Job Title: Consultancy for contextualising Environmental Education material

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Introduction:

  • We are an International NGO is providing Non-Formal Education (NFE) services to children and adolescents in Northeast Syria (NES). NFE activities are provided in temporary learning centres and in formal school settings. We are planning to pilot the Green Generation education package along these activities. Green Generation is an initiative developed by us and WWF designed to strengthen environmental action through extra-curricular educational activities. The project-based programme encourages child-centred and child-led activities based on diverse teaching and learning approaches. Activities provide practical, first-hand experiences in the conservation of local environments, with the main objective to encourage children to identify and solve real life environmental problems critically and creatively in their own communities.
  • The Green Generation package is currently being piloted in other countries and has been translated to Arabic. The Green Generation teaching and learning material is structured into units focusing on different environmental and climate change issues which are relevant for the children and the communities they live in. The material that has been contextualized and will need to be carefully reviewed and adjusted to ensure appropriateness and relevance for the NES-specific context before it is piloted in formal and non-formal learning settings. This includes contextualisation country-specific information and language specific issues that should be adjusted. Illustrations and maps will be provided by a graphic designer.

 

The scope of the consultant includes:

  • Carefully review the Green Generation teaching and learning material and suggest any needed changes and revisions to fit the NES context.
  • Draft and submit the revised Green Generation Package.
  • Facilitate feedback sessions with key stakeholders, including education officials, teachers, and children.
  • Adapt the draft Green Generation package based on feedback.
  • Present the second draft to the SC technical team and key education stakeholders.
  • Once these materials get approved by the SC technical team, put the contents into a proper design and share the final material.

In order to be successful, you will bring/have:

 

 

Essential

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the education sector, preferably with a science or geography background
  • Strong pedagogical skills. Experience with curriculum development and/or development of supplementary teaching and learning material is an advantage.
  • Understanding of project based/inquiry-based learning as a pedagogical approach.
  • Good understanding of climate change issues and knowledge of environment and climate change initiatives.
  • Good understanding of the climate change / environmental context of NES.
  • Must be fluent in Arabic and have good oral and written English.
  • Demonstrate experience in carrying out similar tasks in the past with any other I/NGOs
  • Strong understanding of NES context and understanding and ability to travel in the required region.
  • Flexibility and commitment to learning.
  • Willing to comply with SC Standards and Code of Conduct.
