Job Requirements:

  • A strong understanding of greenhouse technologies, irrigation systems, and plant biology is often required.
  • Graduate of agricultural engineering.
  • Knowledge of delivering Farmer Field Schools and technical training in the field of vegetable production.
  • Strong local context will be an added advantage (candidate residency of Raqqa and Ath-Thawra districts will be prioritized).
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Experience working for a humanitarian NGO is a strong advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members in a cross-cultural environment is required.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and creativity in planning and problem solving.
  • Proven ability to learn quickly, lead a program to achieve stated results and objectives.
  • Effective verbal and written communication, multi-tasking, organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with an ethnically diverse team in a sensitive environment.
  • Previous experience in insecure environments
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Computer skills – Word and Excel are a must.

Job Description:

  1. SUPPORTING PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION
  • Assist and train farmers on best practices regarding the use of greenhouse technology and doing agriculture under the controlled environment in order to improve the quality and quantity of their production.
  • Providing the required technical training through applying Farmer Field School approach (FFS).
  • Develop a clear, applicable, and measurable training plan covering the production lifecycle of vegetable production inside greenhouses, in coordination with the Senior Agriculture Officer and Livelihoods Officer.
  • Analyses the current situation of vegetable production in the province and recommend different vegetable varieties to be grown in the greenhouses.
  • Provide support to Targeted Greenhouse vegetable farmers on design, manufacturing, installation, maintenance and overall greenhouse management.
  • Design and develop the system of vegetable production inside greenhouses.
  • Establish and provide regular extension services to all targeted greenhouse farmers in the selected areas of intervention.
  • Advice greenhouse farmers on better use of fertilizer, water and other resources required for cultivation under the controlled environment.
  • Advice the vegetable farmers in relation to nutrition/irrigation including type of fertilizer (compost) and their application techniques.
  • Report on a weekly and monthly basis to the Livelihoods Officer and Senior Agriculture Officer.
  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the role and level of this job as may be requested by the Livelihoods Manager or Livelihoods Coordinator.
  • Support livelihoods officer to provide technical assistance to the target participants and other field level stakeholders.
  • Full compliance with the protection mainstreaming in livelihoods activities and safeguarding policies in the targeted communities.
  • Assist in identifying targeted areas, installation of the greenhouse kits, monitoring follow up and providing technical support to the participants.
  • Support Livelihoods Officer, and Livelihood Coordinator with day-to-day and weekly necessary field written reports that meet Organization and donor standards.
  • Work closely with Organization support staff and other project staff to ensure that program activities provide maximum impact in target areas.
  • When necessary, assist the team with the sharing of lessons learned and good practices.
  • Assists the Senior Agriculture Officer in designing or reviewing the training material for producing vegetables in greenhouses.
  • Report any feedback and complaints coming from the targeted community to the Livelihood Officer and livelihood coordinator and support the communities with guiding to the CARM system.
  • Expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and organization policies, procedures, and values always and in all in-country venues.
  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Organization to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.
  • Supporting the livelihood officer in archiving all project-related documents and adhering to the principle of non-disclosure and non-use outside of work.
  1. ACCOUNTABILITY TO STAKEHOLDERS
  • Ensure that participant communities are adequately informed about programs, are aware of their entitlements, are comfortable to give feedback and that feedback is used to improve the quality of our programs.
  • Ensure all activities are gender sensitive and follow Organization Gender Equity Policy.
  • Apply Do No Harm standards to ensure activities do not have detrimental effects on vulnerable communities.
  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Organization and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission or put the team, assets, and mission at risk.

Accountability

Reports Directly To: Livelihoods Officer.

Indirect report to: Senior Agriculture Officer.

Works Directly With: All Program team, PAQ Team, field-based logistics and finance teams and other support units.

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders:

Organization team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

General Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Livelihoods Officer, the livelihood technical trainer typically involves providing support in implementing livelihood programs and projects aimed at improving the economic and social well-being of individuals and communities. The livelihood technical trainer has to play core role in the delivering of capacity building and technology transfer to the targeted vegetable farmers through applying farmer field school ( FFS) approach  in order to increase the greenhouse vegetable farmers’ incomes through the effective delivery of the needed technical services , including developing training materials related to off – season vegetable production , assisting with the greenhouse installation and setup, providing technical training and close following up to the participants we work with them within the off-season vegetable production support in Ar-Raqqa and At-Thawrah districts, to ensure that the Greenhouse infrastructures installed runs smoothly. The goal is to make sure that the community we work with has the knowledge and confidence to operate these projects on their own in the most sustainable manner possible. This therefore involves being able to have insights into the sustainability aspect of the projects and help come up with ideas to further promote this through the work we do.

The livelihood technical trainer is also responsible for guiding the targeted vegetable farmers and providing periodic technical support to help them successfully reach production stage as parallel as applying best agricultural practices, maintaining accurate records and documentation of trainings and greenhouse collections, and reporting on progress and results to management and stakeholders.

They may work closely with other program and support staff, and community members to ensure that livelihood interventions are implemented in a collaborative and participatory manner.

Overall, the livelihood technical trainer plays a key role in supporting the development and implementation of sustainable livelihood programs and projects that promote economic growth, poverty reduction, and social empowerment in communities.He/she will have to show full adherence to Organization procedures, policy, and security protocols.
