Job Requirements:

Essential

  • Relevant degree or equivalent preferably in communications, journalism, new media or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience of working in communications or journalism. Specifically in gathering video and photography material to produce content such as human interest stories, social media posts, and press releases.
  • Advance knowledge of written and spoken English.
  • Self-supporting in IT (Windows, spread sheets, word processing)
  • Experience in coaching and transferring skills and knowledge to counterparts.
  • Experience in working with people affected by emergencies and disasters.

 Desirable

  • Strong understanding of or prior experience working with the humanitarian sector, preferably in Education, Protection, WASH, Food Assistance, Livelihood, and Emergency responses.
  • Experience facilitating trainings and workshops.
  • Excellent professional writing, editing, and photography skills.
  • Collaborative attitude and ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Knowledge and skills with graphic design and videography.
  • Knowledge of photo/video editing and production.
  • Proficiency in conducting in-depth interviews to capture meaningful stories and testimonials.
  • Demonstrated use of social media for advocacy purposes
  • Proven experience of developing and managing communications campaigns
  • Detail-oriented, able to multitask.

Job Description:

The Communications Officer will support in the development of communication material to disseminate information and enhance organization influence, visibility, and public engagement. They will be responsible to coordinate and strengthen the skills and capacities of the communication focal points to collect high quality communication material. This role aligns with  strategies for content, visibility, and communications.

The position will conduct field visits and coordinate the communication focal points to gather impactful content through photography and video, creating compelling visual materials to support programs and engage stakeholders. The Communication Officer ensures the development of communication material such as human interest stories, photographs, and social media posts, as well as supporting in content gathering for the roll out of events in the EU, Print Material (brochures, leaflets, flyers) and press releases. This will be done in line with the Syria Communication Plan to raise awareness of the ongoing and escalating humanitarian needs in Syria and provide visibility to the impact of the organization humanitarian emergency response in Syria. The position will also be responsible to gather content for donor reports, assessments, and advocacy documents.

Fluency in Arabic and an advance level in English are required.

Collaborating effectively within a team environment, and working closely with the Syria country team, the Communications Officer will:

Communication

  • Gather high-quality content such as photographs, videos, human-interest stories and develop visibility material for internal and external use to effectively communicate organization’s mission and impact, in line with organization’s communication strategy and guidelines alongside meeting the donor requirements.
  • Conduct in-depth interviews with program participants, organization staff, and key stakeholders to capture compelling stories and testimonials and develop case studies, social media posts, and human-interest stories.
  • Utilize your knowledge of media production equipment and video editing software to conceive, plan, shoot, direct, and edit video pieces.
  • Support the Programme Development and Grants Manager in providing contributions to communication campaigns/events and press releases, Press Conferences, and Media Outreach.
  • Utilize writing skills to create complementary text including for social media posts, human-interest stories, photograph’s captions, and case studies.
  • Coordinate and assist the communication focal points in gathering and creating high quality content for internal and external reporting, such as donor monthly reports.
  • Provide training, workshops and – where appropriate – mentoring communication focal points.
  • Ensure adherence to digital editorial tone, style guides, visual guidelines, and branding identity in all content creation. In line with organization guidelines.
  • Be available to travel within Northeast Syria at short notice to gather communication material, such as photographs, personal stories and case studies that showcase organization’s humanitarian aid activities and its’ emergency response.

Administration

  • Maintain calendar of all external communication material according to donor requirements.
  • Support the Programme Development and Grants Manager in the organization of field visits of organization HQ Communication team.
  • Support in the translation of products from Arabic to English and vice versa to assist in general internal understanding (professional translation services will be sought for most communications campaigns).
  • Proactively develop original communications tools for use by field teams.
  • Work closely with programme to coordinate and appropriately plan and conduct content gathering activities.
  • Liaise with both programme and MEAL staff produce needs assessments and learning documents (fact sheets, articles etc) that showcase needs, impact, and identify different ways of working/the results of different approaches.
  • Keep a central repository and accompanying record of all learning documents created for the Syria/Iraq programme (articles, posters, videos, manuals, toolkits, orientation notes etc).

Advocacy

  • Support in identifying content for position papers in relation to advocacy initiatives.
  • Attend online conferences/webinars and produce minutes for internal dissemination as required.
